Trip 22: Wed-Sun Aug 20-24, 2003

Posted in: Bravo by Radar on August 20, 2003

Who: Chunkie, Tucker, Munchkin, Mayor, Red T., Radar, Gary K.
Site: Bravo Wed-Fri… Alpha Fri-Sun
Menu: Beans, Steaks, Chuck Roast, Baked Taters, Snacks.
Weather: Hot, Humid, No Rain

Chunkie and Munchkin spent Wed and Thurs nights at Bravo. A flip of the coin revealed we needed to move to camp Alpha. We loaded erected tents on trucks and trailers and moved Clampet style to new site Friday. Red and the Mayor arrived during the move. Chunkie went to rope swing with Munchkin who was trying to learn ‘Eskimo roll’ in his kayak – to no avail. Radar and Gary arrived late afternoon and Radar declared luau night. Oldie goldies going full blast on two truck radios. Everyone was roused out of bed to participate by decree of the Mayor. A fun time was had by all. (Munchkin)

Red T. left Saturday to go to his place at Wappappello. Rooster told him the short way was Route O to Route K then left to Annapolis and down 49 and through Sam A Baker park to Highway 34 and Greenville. That would only take about an hour and a half instead of two and a half around US-60. It wound up taking six hours since Red turned right instead of left on Route K and wound up back at Ellington, then tried a shortcut on H or HH ?? to Piedmont. None of the shortcuts worked out as planned and it was almost dark when he got to the lake.

Trip 20 Thurs-Sunday, May 15 – 19, 2003 Buzzard Bros.

Who: Rooster, Chunkie, Tucker
Site: Camp Bravo
Menu: Deer sausage, hot dogs, bologna, chuck roast, sweet rolls, etc.

Thursday……..
Loaded truck with fire wood compliments of Lee. Bought groceries and went to Rooster’s. A bird had gotten under tarp on chuck wagon and died on top of coolers. Had to clean with Chlorox to get rid of maggots and smell. Forgot to get condiments out of Rooster’s small refridgerator, he checked before he left later and brought them. Arrived at Bravo at 2:45pm. Camp was a mess. Cleaned up trash and set up camp. Tucker was crossed over in K.G’s terminology. Made fire, drank cold beer, watched moon eclipse and went to bed. (Chunkie)
Friday……….
Roll call at 6:45AM, light mist. Set up camp tarp and drank beer and watched rain till sun came out at 1PM. Tucker and Chunkie went fishing, caught three. The Mayor pulled in at 4:30pm with long neck in hand. He had to dodge patrols that were tipped off Uni-Tagger was in the area. Rooster broke in a new stratolounger by ripping the tags off first thing. We sat under canopy watching rain, drinking beer, and wondering how it can get any better than this.. (Chunkie)
Rooster had kettle grill with no legs. Chunkie found bracket in camp and we rigged grill on stump. Works great! Rooster cooked supper – deer sausage. (Rooster)
Saturday………….
Walked to gravel bar Sat am. Fished and picked up a few rocks. Rain on and off throughout day. Tucker had a day bed in Rooster’s truck, night bed in Chunkie’s tent, and strato lounger to throttle back with the guys. Chunkie/Wishbone fixed chuck roast on new grill about 5pm. Rooster baked the taters. All throttled back by fire till bedtime about 8pm (Rooster) We were going to have luau by the fire, but as Rooster said, had it in bed listening to the rain. (Chunkie)
Sunday……..
Up about seven, had hard rain about 3am, but things dried out good in morning. Took our time packing up and had fried bologna about 11 and left for home about noon thirty. (Rooster) All I can add is you folks not here missed missed a classic Black River trip. (Chunkie)

Trip 17 Thurs-Sun June 20-23, 2002

Who: Radar, Munchkin, Chunkie, Rooster, Ken Higgins, Jim Tricky, Bumble Bee, Jimmy Minehart, Terry Lingle, Chase Lingle, Tucker

Site: Bravo 5 Tents, Chuck Wagon, Trucks

Menu: Grilled Chicken, coleslaw, P. sausage, hot dogs, ham, breakfast rolls, cookies.

Weather: Fantastic! Highs 90, Lows 60.

Radar, Chunkie and Munchkin arrived and set up camp 6pm Thursday. Lee arrived 11am Friday. Rooster, Ken and Tricky about 2:30pm Friday. Rest about 2pm Saturday. Lee acquired his nickname Bumble Bee this trip.

Our long standing swimming hole upstream from Bravo was filled in with gravel. Found another suitable spot, but not as deep. There were campers at Alpha and Charlie this weekend. This was maiden trip for Ken H. and Jim T. We gave them the grand tour of the area in the back of Radar’s truck Friday evening. Ken made a big mistake by pitching his tent too close behind Chunkie and Radar’s tent. Ken’s snoring volume was the main topic of discussion the next morning. Radar had to leave his tent at 3am when he mistook a tremor caused by the snoring for about a 5.5 quake. The rest of the group got by with earplugs or were too saturated to care. (Radar)

In our efforts to fill Jim and Ken in on some events of the previous trips the story came up of an earlier trip when Munchkin, Rooster and Chunkie were down below the cave cooling it and ran out of beer. While discussing who would walk back to camp to replenish the beer inventory when lo and behold, Chunkie looked up river and said ‘what’s that in the water?’ After a few minutes anticipation here comes a 12 pack of Natural Light floating downstream. Munchkin waded out and intercepted the passing godsend. Not only were we pleasantly surprised to find cold beer come drifting by within reach, but to make it more pleasant, it turned out to be our favorite brand. (Picture Yakov Smirnoff in heavy Russian accent saying, ‘What a country!’) We finally figured out it was our own beer we had tied to a root wad in the river by camp to keep cool. Regardless, it came floating by at a very opportune time. We laughed at our own ignorance for many trips to follow. So far on this trip Chunky has yet to draw blood – an eagerly awaited ritual usually fulfilled in one form or another. (Munchkin)

When we were at Sutton’s Bluff Saturday Bumble Bee did a double back dive off the bluff – 45 feet. Rooster’s ass was puckered but Chunkie said not to worry, he has his own insurance now. The Mayor said he would cook the chicken but he talked Chunkie into doing the cooking. Lee told Jim he would be back to camp at 3 – Jim should know better since he was having dinner fed to him. He finally showed up at 6:30. (Chunkie)
